APCO Business Update
On Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 4 p.m., during the 2nd General Business Meeting of the Quorum at the 76th annual APCO Conference & Exposition, the Quorum was asked to vote on two resolutions, as well as on the positions of 1st and 2nd vice president.
Resolution 1 passed unanimously with no discussion. It will rename several membership categories. Active Member will become Full Member; Member will become Associate Member; and Governmental Group will become Agency Group. There are no changes to the Commercial, Corporate Group or International Associate member categories. A new category is also established: Online Member.
Resolution 2 also passed, but with an amendment proposed by CPRA member Jim Acosta.
Resolution 2 defines in more detail the APCO Senior and Life Membership qualifications. The goal is to bring an even higher level of candidate forward and encourage the future leaders of the association to strive toward meeting the requirements of the Senior and Life Member designations.
The short discussion preceding the vote centered on the resolution’s recommendations to remove from the criteria for Life Member the chairing of regional conference subcommittees. The CPRA and Northern California chapters expressed the belief that subcommittee chairs were responsible for a lot of the work that goes into making a regional conference successful and that removing those positions from the list of criteria would limit too much the qualifications for Life Membership. CPRA introduced an amendment to Resolution 2 at the 1st Business Meeting to retain the chairing of the subcommittees as criteria for Life Membership. At the 2nd Business Meeting, the full Quorum voted to accept the amendment. The Quorum then approved Resolution 2 as amended. The amendment means that one of the criteria to qualify for Life Member status will continue to include chairing a subcommittee of a regional conference planning committee.
Under the SGI, the position of president-elect is being eliminated going forward. So the Quorum was asked to vote on Gregg Riddle for 1st vice president and Terry Hall for 2nd vice president. The vote was unanimously favorable, and the two men will continue in their positions for the 2010-2011 year. Bill Carrow will be the association’s last president elect.
During the Blue and White Gala on Tuesday night, Carrow, Riddle and Hall were sworn into office and duly accepted their responsibilities for the coming year.
