Huntsville EMS Chooses In Motion Technology for Mission Critical Communications
Vancouver, BC, & Huntsville, Ala. — In Motion Technology, the leader in mobile networking technologies that efficiently connect and manage equipment, information and people in the field, today announced that Huntsville Emergency Medical Services, Inc. (HEMSI) has chosen the company’s mobile networking solution to improve emergency communications and fleet management.
“In Motion Technology has tremendously improved our communications reliability and up-time,” said Jerry Slaughter, HEMSI’s IT Director. “Now, our medics and the local ER are better able to share lifesaving information, so patients receive the right care faster, and have better outcomes.”
With In Motion Technology in its fleet, HEMSI now has:
Reliable, Secure Mobile Networking. In Motion’s onBoard Mobile Gateway turns each HEMSI ambulance into a mobile hotspot, providing connectivity to multiple data devices in and around the vehicle.
Improved Pre-hospital Care. Since installing the Gateways a year ago and using Physio-Control LIFEPAK defibrillators, HEMSI medics have been able to send real-time, diagnostic-quality ECG information to the ER before the patient arrives at the hospital. Now, physicians can make a preliminary diagnosis, medics can begin the appropriate treatment, and ER and cath lab staff can be ready for the patient’s arrival.
Better Dispatching and Tracking. The GPS-equipped Gateway continuously feeds vehicle location data to HEMSI’s Intergraph dispatch system. This ensures the closest ambulance is dispatched, uses the best route and gets to the patient faster. Using In Motion’s vehicle tracking dashboard, HEMSI can monitor the location, direction and speed of its vehicles in and out of HEMSI’s service area.
Remote, Real Time Vehicle Monitoring. HEMSI fleet managers monitor engine parameters to identify vehicle problems early and reduce critical failures that waste precious time and money. In the future, the Gateway can be integrated with vehicle “black box” technology to alert HEMSI to inefficient or unsafe vehicle operations.
Before deploying Gateways throughout its fleet, HEMSI relied on laptops with aircards for mobile communications. However, the software proved to be unreliable and the system was frequently down. In Motion Technology has improved connectivity and reduced dropped connections significantly.
Engineered to work in extreme conditions, the Gateway is bolted into each ambulance, powered by the vehicle, and requires no user intervention. Devices power-up and connect instantly, freeing medics to focus on patient care, and not their wireless connection. The Gateway is also flexible and future-proof, allowing devices and networks to be easily added or changed. Soon HEMSI will be adding tablet PCs with electronic patient care reporting technology to improve patient information, and streamline billing and other administrative functions. In Motion Technology also allows HEMSI to track data usage for improved financial management and cost controls.
“We had all of our Gateways installed, up and running, and on the road in two weeks,” said Slaughter. “It works so seamlessly, our crews don’t realize it’s there, but we rely on it for every call.”
Serving more than 300,000 residents of Huntsville-Madison County, HEMSI provides advanced and basic life support, non-emergency medical transportation, and many other services to protect the health and welfare of the community. HEMSI is the only EMS across 830 square miles, and the only ambulance service in the state to be certified by the Commission on Accredited Ambulance Services, the gold standard for emergency medical care.
“HEMSI is recognized for its dedication to world class service and the highest standards of care, and we are honored to have been selected as their partner for mobile networking and emergency communications,” said Tony Morris, In Motion’s VP of Sales and Marketing. “HEMSI now has a powerful new way connect, track, and manage its fleet, and improve emergency services for the residents of Northern Alabama.”
