Orange County, Calif. — A man who authorities say made thousands of obscene calls to female 911 dispatchers was sentenced Friday to 21 days in jail and three years’ probation, court records show.
Israel Vazquez, a twice-deported 34-year-old, pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor counts of annoying or harassing 911 operators, a misdemeanor count of possessing a false ID and a misdemeanor count of falsely representing himself to an officer, according to Orange County Superior Court records.
Authorities say Vazquez made more than 2,000 graphic, obscenity-laden calls over the past year, including 1,000 calls to one Orange County Sheriff’s Department dispatcher alone. Investigators believe he also targeted dispatchers at the California Highway Patrol and the Garden Grove Police Department, and may have called dispatchers in Westminster and other agencies as well.
He was reportedly able to evade capture by using multiple cell phones under false names. Sheriff’s deputies arrested him Feb. 25 after tracing an obscene call to his residence in Stanton.
Vazquez, who has been deported to Mexico on two occasions, was placed on an immigration hold after his arrest. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he would be deported again.
