NEW YORK — The expert hired to rescue the city’s effort to build a new 911 system is leaving his job after less than a year and long before the new emergency communications network is ready.

Glen “Skip” Funk, Mayor Bloomberg’s director of emergency communications, quit his $200,000-a-year job yesterday despite Hizzoner’s attempts to hold on to him.

“We were begging him to stay,” said one City Hall source. “He’s got some family stuff going on.”

Officially, Bloomberg spokesman Marc LaVorgna said Funk will continue as a consultant with the city and praised his efforts in getting the delayed, over-budget, $2.03 billion 911 system on track.

Funk also was criticized last year for being part of the Bloomberg administration’s bungled response to the Christmas-weekend blizzard.

Funk did not respond to requests for comment yesterday.
