A telephone service outage caused problems for some area 911 systems Wednesday night.
Portland Police Chief Randy Wright issued a statement about 10 p.m. saying only about 1 in 10 calls were able to get through on the city’s 911 lines.
“A major, widespread telephone service outage has occurred in South Texas,” Wright said in a news release. “At the moment, Verizon has not identified the problem. The outage includes the AT&T system.”
MetroCom, the Corpus Christi and Nueces County 911 center, was receiving all 911 calls, but some calls to nonemergency lines weren’t connecting, supervisor Gricelda Garza said.
The outage affects telephone calls but not radio communications between emergency responders, Wright said.
