9-1-1: Red Lights in Sky Could be Northern Lights

External News Source October 25, 2011 Industry

By Greg Gross, The York Dispatch

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Did you see strange lights in the night sky Monday?

You’re not the only one.

York County 911 received a number of calls from all over the county about red lights in the sky about 9:30 p.m.

However, there may be a reasonable explanation for the lights. According to 911, the lights could have been aurora borealis, or northern lights.

With the sun in an active stage, there’s a greater chance for those in areas not accustom to seeing northern lights to see the light display, according to Accuweather.com.

Solar flares have been blasting out of a large sunspot region lately and have caused more widespread viewing of the northern and southern lights, Accuweather.com states.

Red lights in the sky were also reported in Oil City, which is in the northwestern part of Pennsylvania.
