THE SATELLITE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION APPLAUDS INTRODUCTION OF SATELLITE EXPORT CONTROL REFORM BILL

November 8, 2011

Washington, D.C., November 2, 2011 – The Satellite Industry Association (SIA) strongly endorsed the introduction yesterday of H.R. 3288, the “Safeguarding United States Leadership and Security Act of 2011,” legislation that would reform the U.S. framework for satellite export controls. The bill would authorize the President to remove satellites and related components from the U.S. Munitions List, subject to certain restrictions and Congressional oversight. The bill was co-sponsored by Representatives Howard Berman (D-CA), Donald Manzullo (R-IL), Adam Smith (D-WA), Mike Coffman (R-CO), C.A. “Dutch” Ruppersberger (D-MD), Rob Bishop (R-UT), Gerald Connolly (D-VA), Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), and Martin Heinrich (D-NM).

APCO Advocates Sustainable Funding of Emergency Communications

November 8, 2011

Today, The Federal Communications Commission today released its third annual report regarding states that have diverted any portion of the 911 fees they collect for purposes other than 911 programs. APCO International strongly believes that tapping 9-1-1 fees jeopardizes public safety’s ability to acquire and implement existing, as well as new and emerging, technologies necessary to continue receiving and responding to emergency situations and providing essential emergency services to citizens.

“We must ensure that public safety has the funds it needs not only to answer 9-1-1 calls, but to take action and dispatch emergency services to calls for help in critical situations,” said APCO International President Gregg Riddle.

Consolidated City Police and Fire Dispatch Center in Operation

When you have a car crash, a fire, a fall or another emergency in the city, your call for help will be answered by a dispatcher at the Oroville Police Department. The new combined Oroville police and fire dispatch station began fielding calls at 7 a.m. Tuesday, and Oroville Police Chief Bill LaGrone said the transition has gone smoothly.
