APCO Seeks Comments on Draft Core Competencies and Minimum Training Standards for Public Safety Communications Supervisor

APCO International February 27, 2012 APCO

Alexandria, VA—February 27, 2012— The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International released for comments a Candidate American National Standard (ANS) that identifies the core competencies and minimum training requirements for Public Safety Communications Supervisor.

Candidate APCO ANS 3.102.1-201x focuses on competencies and training for the position that is typically tasked with managing daily operations, performing administrative duties and maintaining employee relations within public safety communications centers. The Public Safety Communications Supervisor provides leadership and guidance to employees in order to achieve the agency’s mission, while providing service to the public and emergency responders. This standard refers to this function of the position commonly titled “Supervisor;” however, agencies may title the position differently.

“While this standard is important for those already in a supervisory role, it also provides direction for those who aspire to be a supervisor,” APCO International President Gregg Riddle said.

The public review and comment period is an important step in the standard development process. This provides an opportunity for all interested parties to review and contribute.  The draft standard can be downloaded for review at  https://www.apcointl.org/standards/apco-standards-activities-in-progress/. Comments must be submitted by April 9, 2012 to standards@apcointl.org.
