Dispatcher Helps Los Angeles Firefighters Rescue Woman Trapped in Apartment Fire
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles firefighters rescued a 19-year-old woman trapped inside her burning second-floor apartment in the San Fernando Valley.
Fire spokesman Erik Scott says the woman called 911 before dawn Saturday and said she opened the bedroom door to find her living room engulfed in flames, blocking her exit. Dispatchers ordered her to hunker down in the bathroom with wet towels around the door. (Check out this video.)
Crews responding to the large three-story building in Van Nuys found a huge plume of smoke pouring out of one unit. Firefighters broke down the front door and carried the woman to safety. She was not injured.
Her apartment sustained at least $40,000 in damage.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation. Scott says it may be electrical in nature.
