Exalt Backhauls Emergency Communications for Houston County, Minnesota

CAMPBELL, Calif. — September 19, 2012— Exalt Communications today announced that Houston County, Minn., is using an Exalt microwave backhaul system to connect all of the county’s public safety radio communications. The system connects Houston County to Minnesota’s Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response (ARMER), the interoperable emergency communications network that links agencies, local governments, and first-responders throughout the state. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office headed up the project, and the selection of Exalt saved significant costs for the county.

Houston County shares a border with both Wisconsin and Iowa, and is comprised of seven cities and 17 townships. The sheriff’s office designed a radio dispatch center as part of the newly-built Houston County Justice Center, upgrading dispatch radios to a digital P25 land-mobile radio (LMR) system that connects emergency services for the county. Exalt systems backhaul digital radio traffic between the dispatch center and the county’s tower site, where Exalt also connects to Minnesota’s statewide ARMER network. Working with Exalt partner Calhoun Communications of Sioux City, Iowa, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office deployed the Exalt 11 GHz backhaul system.

“We built the new Houston County Justice Center to improve the safety, security, and mobility of our first-responders and citizens. Exalt provided a straightforward solution that helped us achieve these goals,” said Chief Deputy Scott Yeiter of the Houston County Sheriff’s Office. “This was our first foray into microwave networking, as part of joining ARMER, and Exalt’s equipment has performed flawlessly since the installation was finished.”
