The FCC’s narrowbanding deadline is just a couple weeks away, and the FCC has stated it will take any non-compliant systems off the air after Jan. 1, 2013, or assess federal penalties, including fines. Additionally, the FCC will begin refarming the new 12.5 kHz channels created by narrowbanding, which could result in interference with any wideband channels still in operation.

How do I become compliant?  The APCO International spectrum management arm, AFC, provides comprehensive radio frequency management for public safety agencies. AFC can help you become compliant. Start by following the steps below:

Review your license: To determine if you need to add narrowband emission to your license, go to http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/searchLicense.jsp and enter your call sign.

Submit your application: APCO can process your application for you. Submit your application at http://www.apcointl.org/spectrum-management/frequency-coordination/e-z-narrowbanding-work-order.html, or e-mail Christine Phelps at phelpsc@apcointl.org.

Waiver requests: If your agency is diligently working on converting to narrowband, but you’ll need more time, submit a waiver request to the FCC NOW. For additional information regarding waivers, visit http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-11-1189A1.pdf.

For more information: For additional information about the deadline and a list of FAQs, visit http://transition.fcc.gov/pshs/public-safety-spectrum/narrowbanding.html.
