Verizon Users in Maine Can Now Text 9-1-1
Sun Journal (Lewiston, Maine)
AUGUSTA (AP) — Verizon Wireless is allowing customers to dash off a text to 9-1-1 when it’s not possible to call.
Maine Public Safety Commissioner John Morris said the service could be a lifesaver in a situation where someone is unable to make a voice call.
Public safety officials envision text 9-1-1 being used as an alternative to a traditional call when an individual is hearing impaired or when an individual cannot make a voice call, for example during in a home invasion or a medical emergency that renders an individual incapable of speech.
Officials caution that a phone call is still best, and that texts should only be used when a call isn’t possible. The service is for Verizon users who’re within range of a Verizon tower.
