JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — The Jacksonville Department of Public Safety is going digital with its 911 system.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reports (http://bit.ly/17iFLlq ) a contract is in the works with equipment to be delivered in the spring and the system going live in June.

Jacksonville Police Chief Mike Yaniero said the system will fundamentally change the way operators answer calls and how officers respond to emergencies. It will allow operators to find the location of cellphones quickly. Those calling 911 will be able to send texts, videos and pictures of emergencies to operators.

In the current analog system, information is relayed entirely by voice.

Yaniero says the improvements will coincide with next year’s move to a new $23 million public safety center.
