LTE Trial Performed by Brazilian Army, Motorola Solutions Delivers Faster Response Times for Citizen Safety

Company Representative November 4, 2013 Product & Service Announcements

SÃO PAULO– Motorola Solutions, a leading provider of mission-critical communication solutions and services for enterprise and government customers, announced with the Brazilian Army, the results of the LTE (Long Term Evolution) trial at a frequency of 700 MHz. The trial, which started in May 2012, in Brasilia, had an investment of US$ 2 million from Motorola and showed the benefits of using such technology to improve public services in Brazil.

Throughout this period, several continuous tests were performed, including during three important events, in which was possible to prove in practice the efficiency in data transmission, in addition to the possibilities and alternatives for improvement of the Brazilian security framework. The main benefits observed in the use of an LTE network include the possibility of promoting mobility for the activities already performed by the Army through video applications, PTT (VoIP), text messages, web applications access, etc. The information is sent in real time from the field to the Army’s command and control room, where it is monitored so that appropriate measures can be taken immediately, in any critical situation.

KEY FACTS

•             For test execution, three sites were installed in Brasilia, providing LTE network coverage to the Esplanade of the Ministries and areas of interest to the Army, such as airport and critical infrastructures, allowing its use by other security agencies of the Brazilian capital.

•             The first practical test occurred in the civic parade on September 7, 2012, in Brasilia. Army’s representatives in charge of the event control and management received camera images through mobile terminals. They were provided with wide visibility of what was taking place at various points of the event, especially at the most critical ones, such as the dispersion area, where there was a greater need for organization.

•             During the Confederations Cup, a new site was installed to increase coverage of Mané Garrincha stadium and its surroundings. The Army could operate normally, with no communication problems, despite the unforeseen events that occurred in mobile phone networks. This is because the Army operated in an exclusive band, which allowed full network availability before, during and after Confederations Cup opening game. Fixed and mobile cameras were able to send in real time images to Army’s vehicles and military bases.

•             The Brazilian Army aims at filing a request with Anatel for extending 700 MHz band testing until December 2014. The goal is to take advantage of this year’s experience in order to have a more operational solution during FIFA World Cup, as well as to aggregate new public sector agencies so that they can test the benefits of an integrated and shared network, contributing to the studies related to the use of 4G network for public services.
