Silent Key: David Binns
David Alexander Binns, born May 23, 1930, in Nashville, Tenn., died March 23, 2014, in Caddo Mills, Texas. He is survived by his daughter Carolyn Binns Brown; grandchildren David Brown, Jason Brown and Julie Brown Booker; great grandchildren Taylor Brown, Callie Norwood, Victoria Brown and William Brown; sister Janet Binns Williams. At the time, he was survived by his wife of 58 years, Frances (Fran) Smith Binns, but she sadly passed away 5 days later on March 28, 2014.
David Binns grew up in Nashville, graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1948 and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a licensed pilot who loved ham radio and exploring new technology.
David Binns loved and worked in the communications/technology industry most of his life, starting as an engineer for radio station WLAC AM in Nashville. He enjoyed a successful career in many sales and engineering positions, most recently for Modular Communications Systems (ModUcom). David Binns was an active Commercial Member of APCO for more than 30 years, and was a familiar face on the APCO conference exhibit floor, always with a big Texas smile and welcoming handshake. Many APCO members will remember Dave and his wife, Fran, as familiar faces in all APCO activities and, together with Bob and Doris Moesch, it doesn’t quite seem like an APCO conference without them.
The APCO Silent Key is a special tribute and honor to those APCO Members who have passed away. It doesn’t matter what class of membership the deceased held or how long they were a member—all members count and deserve this honor. Please contact APCO International or Lin Ford (linsapco@aol.com) if you hear of a member’s passing.
