Calif. Girl, 6, Saves Mother with 9-1-1 Call
While mothers across the nation will be bombarded with cards and coffee mugs on Mother’s Day, a Hemet girl gave her mother the best gift of all: a saved life.
Early Saturday morning, the Hemet Fire Department received a 9-1-1 call from the 6-year-old girl reporting that her mother was unresponsive.
It turns out the girl’s mother is diabetic and had a dangerously low blood sugar level when the call was made, Hemet Fire Department Capt. Bill Herder said.
“She was unconscious, and nobody else was home,” Herder said.
Despite the urgency, Herder said, the girl remained calm, staying on the line with fire dispatch until paramedics arrived.
The paramedics quickly tended to the mother, who regained consciousness at the scene. The mother and the girl were taken to a nearby hospital where the mother was treated.
At 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Herder said, the mother, whose name was not released, had been discharged from the hospital. Herder said “things could have been much worse” if the girl hadn’t called 9-1-1.
“We’re really proud of the little girl,” Herder said. “She did the right thing and was very brave.”
