Silent Key: Lloyd Fayling
APCO Senior Member Lloyd Fayling died suddenly last evening, July 26, in an apparent reaction to wasp or bee stings while at home. His accidental death brings to an abrupt close an illustrious career in public safety, which began in 1964 as a patrol officer in his hometown of Kalamazoo. Two years later, Lloyd joined the Michigan State Police and while a sergeant was tapped in 1972 to start up the first centralized dispatch center in the state with six police and seven fire agencies for Genesee County 911. He joined APCO the same year and over time grew this centralized effort into the independent 911 consortium it is today involving 30 police, 18 fire and 9 emergency medical service agencies throughout the county, excluding the cites of Flint and Fenton.
Lloyd earned a reputation as an outspoken advocate for common sense solutions to public safety communications and association issues during his long tenure on the APCO Executive Council. He was also a member of the 2005-06 Executive Director Search Committee, held every office in the Michigan chapter and helped organize most state conferences as well as the 61st APCO Annual Conference in Detroit in 1995.
