Securing Public Safety Networks from the PSAP Perspective

APCO International August 16, 2016 APCO

Yesterday, APCO hosted a session focused on Cybersecurity – Securing Public Safety Networks from the PSAP Perspective. The first half of the session focused on defining the cybersecurity threat, detailing the types of potential attacks, and providing examples of some actual attacks that have targeted public safety communications. The second half of the session was dedicated to providing some tools, resources and options to PSAP and public safety attendees.

The resources presented included the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, the NICE Workforce Training document, and the FCC Task Force on Optimal PSAP Architecture (TFOPA) Cybersecurity report. All three are valuable tools in the fight against cyber attack. In addition, attendees were made aware of some current federal, state, and local resources that are available to them today.
