APCO Announces Approval of APCO ANS Public Safety Communications Incident Handling Process Standard

APCO International January 10, 2019 APCO

Alexandria, VA – The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International received final approval from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) on January 9, 2019, for an American National Standard (ANS) that defines the recommended minimum steps and decision-making processes for the handling of public safety requests for service (referred to as “incident”).

ANSI/APCO 1.113.1-2019 Public Safety Communications Incident Handling Process was developed by multiple working groups from across the country. The purpose of this standard is to assist the ECC (Emergency Communications Center) with establishing, implementing, and maintaining the method by which an incident is processed in the most efficient manner for the most effective outcomes. The steps and potential outcomes identified in this standard were identified through a structured storyboarding process by industry subject matter experts.

“This standard can be used as an effective tool to establish processes and improve performance when it comes to handling calls for service,” said Holly Wayt, President of APCO International.

This standard may be downloaded at the APCO Standards to Download webpage.
