Right of Boom – Cyber Incident Response for Emergency Communications
Cybersecurity is a very real risk to current public safety communications centers and systems. This presentation discussed the current threat landscape and included sector specific risk briefings. The focus of the presentation was on what happens “right of boom” in a cyber-attack.
The presentation covered training (we fight like we train) and several other topics including proper selection and use of passwords, network defense in depth, and physical security. In addition, the presenter noted that it is important to build vendor partnerships and cooperation before, during, and after the attack.
Everyone has a role, what’s yours? The presentation used a sample attack (from a real-world example) to discuss response during and immediately after an attack and the long term actions required to remain safe from follow on attacks. The presentation discussed how does an agency respond to, remediate, and recover from an attack. In addition, this presentation discussed cybersecurity options for consideration including the future of cyber in NG9-1-1, the Emergency Communications Cybersecurity Center (EC3) concept and provided some existing resources and best practices agencies can use now to improve their cybersecurity posture. Finally, the presenter discussed how you can get involved now, because later may be too late.
