APCO Files a Project Initiation and Seeks Work Group Members to Create a Standard for Managing Operational Overload in the Public Safety Communications Center

APCO International October 24, 2019 APCO

Alexandria, VA – The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International has filed a Project Initiation with ANSI and has issued a call for participation for work group members to participate in the creation of an ANSI standard addressing emergency communications center overload.

This standard will provide communications center management with best practices for planning, mitigating and handling operational overload. Common situations include, but are not limited to, severe weather-related incidents (tornado, hurricane, flooding), natural or manmade disasters, mutual aid incidents, as well as day-to-day overload incidents.

“In today’s environment, emergency communications centers (ECCs) regularly experience situations where workload overwhelms available personnel,” said Tracey Hilburn, APCO International President. “This standard will establish best practices to guide centers through significant incidents that tax the ECC.”

APCO is looking for a well-balanced group that will include contributions from training, technical and operational subject matter experts. The time and day that the work group will meet is yet to be established. It is anticipated that the group will meet via conference calls twice monthly for the duration of this project and calls typically last no more than one hour per session.

All Interested persons should complete the online application and indicate their preference for this work group. The deadline is November 24, 2019. Selections will be made within two weeks of the deadline and all applicants will be notified of their status.
