Meet Your AFC Advisor: Mike Kionka (Colorado)

APCO International September 10, 2021 Industry

AFC, APCO’s frequency coordination department, is pleased to introduce its network of dedicated local advisor volunteers. APCO’s advisors are responsible for frequency coordination in their home state and we would like to bring awareness and recognition to the dedication they exhibit on a daily basis. Please feel free to reach out to our local advisors with any questions dealing with FCC Part 90 licensing and frequency coordination.

Mike Kionka has been the Colorado APCO Local Advisor since 2018.  Born and raised in the Denver Colorado area, Mike received his Bachelor of Sciences Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Colorado in 2001.  Mike worked 10 years as a consultant for the US Fish & Wildlife Service designing and project managing their VHF P25 radio system upgrades across the country, including frequency nomination and planning.

In 2011 Mike began working for the State of Colorado as an engineer supporting the statewide digital trunked radio system.  This system has nearly 250 sites and over 75,000 subscriber radios that utilize it for public safety communications.

Mike has served on the Colorado Region 7 700 and 800 MHz Regional Planning Committees since 2011, and the Project 25 Compliance Assessment Program advisory panel since 2016.

Mike holds an FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License in addition to an Extra Class Amateur license.  Besides amateur radio, Mike’s hobbies include motorcycle road racing during the summer season and snowmobiling in the winter.
