APCO International Announces New Chief Technology Officer

Lauren Larson March 14, 2022 APCO, Technology

Alexandria, VA – APCO International today announced that Mel Maier, former Commander of the Emergency Communications and Operations Division of the Oakland County (MI) Sheriff’s Office, will be joining APCO as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

Mr. Maier begins his new position today. As APCO’s CTO, Maier will lead APCO’s technical efforts related to Next Generation 9-1-1, cybersecurity and other emerging technologies.

Mr. Maier began his career in public safety more than 30 years ago as a patrol officer with the Garden City, Michigan, Police Department. Since then, he has served as patrol Sergeant and Lieutenant, and he joined the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office in 2009. In his previous position, Maier was responsible for overseeing radio and 9-1-1 emergency communications and was the sheriff’s communications representative within Oakland County’s Homeland Security and Emergency Operations Center.

Mr. Maier has been an active voice for public safety communications at the national level. He has served on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s SAFECOM Emergency Response Council, on FirstNet’s Public Safety Advisory Committee and as the leader of the Public Safety Next Generation 9-1-1 Coalition.

“The APCO International family of elected officers and staff are thrilled that Mel is joining APCO,” APCO Executive Director and CEO Derek K. Poarch said. “Mel’s expertise in public safety communications is well-recognized in the 9-1-1 community and we feel confident that his knowledge and experience will help lead our association and members well into the future as our CTO.”
