Having Difficult Conversations

APCO International August 9, 2022 APCO

Tuesday, August 9 | 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Christine B. Massengale, ENP, RPL, Dispatch Coordinator, Tennessee Department of Safety

This was a fun session about the heavy topic of having difficult conversations with employees. Leaders are often challenged to have these conversations with a diverse workforce of individuals who respond differently to tough criticisms.

It’s about identifying the root of the problem,  organizing your thoughts on when, where, and how to have the talk and then doing just that – talking and listening to employees.

A key takeaway is that knowing your employees and understanding their issues and the context of what they are going through can help you navigate the discussion. One simple way to start that conversation is by asking, “How are you doing?”

At the end of the session, attendees provided examples of talks they need to have and got tips on how to begin the conversation.
