Silent Key: Donald Ray Whitney

APCO International December 29, 2022 APCO

APCO Life Member Donald Ray Whitney of Barrington, Illinois, passed away December 28 at the age of 74. Whitney enjoyed a long tenure in public safety communications for Motorola and was a longstanding member of the Commercial Advisory Council (CAC), including service on the APCO Board of Directors (2009-2013).

Whitney was an APCO commercial member since 1972 and a member of the Illinois Chapter. For many years, he served as the CAC Representative on the Executive Council and on the Professional Developments Events Committee. Whitney was honored in 2015 for a lifetime of APCO service as a recipient of the Jack Daniel Award of Distinction.

Whitney is survived by his wife Sue and many family and friends. APCO Past President Nathan McClure III recalls having first met when “Don was a dispatcher with NIU PD, and I was with Winnebago County. We continued our friendship with APCO through the decades. Don always provided a strong voice for APCO’s commercial members.”

Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. January 4 at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. (Lake Cook Road) Barrington. The funeral service will be held January 5 at Salem Methodist Church, Barrington.
