APCO Statement on FCC Nominations

APCO International May 22, 2023 APCO, Government

Alexandria, VA – Today, President Biden announced the nomination of Anna Gomez to serve as Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the renominations of current Commissioners Carr and Starks.

Ms. Gomez has a distinguished record of promoting public safety communications including during her tenure as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Deputy Administrator at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. In that position, Ms. Gomez played a key role in the formation and implementation of the 2012 legislation that created a $115M grant program to advance 9-1-1 service, the nationwide public safety broadband network, and a $300M research and development program for public safety communications. Ms. Gomez also has extensive experience serving in other senior federal government roles as an expert on communications policy.

Commissioners Carr and Starks have demonstrated a commitment to serving the public interest as existing Commissioners. They have both been supportive of advancing public safety communications including several visits to 9-1-1 centers.

“Ms. Gomez is a highly talented and experienced communications professional who understands the needs of the public safety community,” APCO International Executive Director and CEO Derek Poarch said. “I am confident she will serve the country well as a Commissioner at the FCC. APCO also welcomes the renominations of Commissioners Carr and Starks, and we look forward to continuing to work with both of their offices.”
