City of McAllen Implements Citywide Surveillance Camera System

Company Representative August 24, 2010 Product & Service Announcements

Reston, Va. — Wi4Net, a division of CelPlan Technologies Inc. and a leading provider of integrated wireless broadband and video surveillance solutions, today announced it completed the implementation of a citywide camera system for the City of McAllen, Texas. The camera network complements the City’s existing fiber and wireless infrastructure, providing security throughout the downtown areas of the City and main City parks.

“We are excited about the implementation of our project,” said Belinda Mercado, IT Director with the City of McAllen. “We have adopted state-of-the-art megapixel camera technology in many of our locations to assure sufficient resolution for license plate recognition. In addition, we have been able to leverage our fiber optic and wireless network to make this a success. With its experience in both wireless and camera technologies, CelPlan was an essential partner in making this project a reality.”

The network includes outdoor cameras connecting either directly to the City’s fiber network, or, wirelessly, using the 4.9 GHz public safety spectrum. Megapixel cameras feature H.264 encoding to assure efficient use of network bandwidth. The system is controlled by an open architecture video management solution, which allows for monitoring of cameras from any networked location, assuming proper authorization and personal access rights. Showcasing the scalability of the solution, convention center cameras have already been added to the system, and further expansions are planned.

“We are very excited to have been part of this unique project,” marked Jasper Bruinzeel, Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Wi4Net. “Thanks to recent advances, such as H.264 encoding, the City of McAllen has been able to leverage megapixel camera technology in combination with a 4.9 GHz standards-based wireless communications infrastructure.”
