Dereck Orr, Division Chief of the Public Safety Communications Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, described research taking place for public safety communications and efforts to encourage more technology developers to get involved in enhancing public safety. He provided an overview of the Public Safety Communications Research grant program and prize challenges.

Projects that are underway are focusing on enhanced user interfaces and experiences, location-based services, mission-critical voice, the transition from Land Mobile Radio to LTE, public safety analytics, resilient systems, and security.
