10 Years Later, N.Y. Responders Communicate Better

Sept. 11 was a convergence of the worst possible problems in communication technology — a jammed commercial network made cell phone use impossible. Police and firefighter radio networks were not compatible. But the main problem, the FDNY says, was the damage done to infrastructure called repeaters, which made radio signals work at the twin towers. That left many commanders and firefighters unable to talk to each other. Firefighters in the stairwells couldn’t hear the evacuation order and as a result, 343 died.

Delayed 9-1-1 Response Leads to Street Name Review in Maine

Town Manager Michael Heavener told the Town Council on Monday night that the review comes in response to apparent confusion on June 6, when dispatchers sent police to the wrong address, delaying officers’ arrival to the shooting scene by several minutes.

Prank 9-1-1 Call Ties Up Crews for an Hour

August 4, 2011

INDIANA COUNTY, Pa. — A prank 911 phone call sent emergency officials on an hourlong search for a woman who claimed she was giving birth in the parking lot of an Indiana County mall. Gary Ryan, Indiana County’s 911 coordinator, said a dispatcher received a call on Tuesday night from a frantic woman asking for assistance after she began giving birth in a Chevrolet Tahoe in the parking lot of the Indiana Mall, near a theater.

Eshoo Pushes Funding Bill so 9-1-1 Dispatchers Can Accept Photos, Videos & Text Messages

Someday soon, a person whose house is being robbed will be able to text 911 for help while hiding inside a closet or send police dispatchers a cellphone video of the thief driving away. As a group of Peninsula cities are moving to implement “Next-Generation 9-1-1” systems that allow emergency dispatch centers to accept photos, videos and text messages that have become standard fare for many cellphone users, Rep. Anna Eshoo is working to advance the systems on a national level.
