Prankster Ties up Police Dispatchers with Fake 9-1-1 Calls

Salt Lake City — A prankster in California used a falsely-registered cell phone to flood Salt Lake City police dispatch with hundreds of calls in a single day last week, police officials said. Between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Nov. 2, dispatchers received 617 calls from the number, said dispatch supervisor Pam Peay.

County Central Dispatch to Create Backup Center

Marshall, Mich. — If the Marshall 9-1-1 center had to be evacuated, dispatchers would have a back-up location to answer emergency calls. The Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority on Tuesday approved the creation of a second functioning dispatch center in Battle Creek.

Hennepin County, Minn., Wants $25 Million Call Center

Hennepin County (Minn.) Commissioner Jeff Johnson wants a $25 million emergency communications facility to be built on the site of the Adult Corrections Facility in Plymouth, an area he represents. The new center would replace the county’s 14,400-square-foot call center in Golden Valley.

Oklahoma City — Nearly 1 million 9-1-1 calls are made every year to the Oklahoma City Emergency Communications Center, and many fall well below what most people would consider an emergency. Calltaker Brenda Grayson said people will phone because their kids won’t get up and go to school, their boyfriends won’t come inside the house when told, or their husbands change the channel on the television and won’t change it back.
