Anthony Melia has been APCO’s local advisor in the state of New Jersey for nearly 17 years. He has over 26 years of extensive communications and emergency management experience and has been consistently recognized for outstanding accomplishments. Throughout his career, Anthony has obtained substantial training in numerous technological areas such as radio communications infrastructure, on scene coordination, and planning and training.

Meet Your AFC Advisors: Paul M. Mayer (Ohio)

March 9, 2017

Paul M. Mayer retired in 2014 after more than 46 years of service to the citizens of Ohio. Paul began his state service on April 29, 1968, as a communications officer at the Berea District 10 Headquarters (Ohio Turnpike) of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He was transferred to the Massillon District 3 Headquarters where he continued to learn his craft. In 1980, he was promoted to radio technician 3 and sent back to Berea as the district chief technician where he primarily supervised highway patrol telecommunications operations across the 241-mile-long Ohio Turnpike and secondarily served as the Highway Patrol’s telecommunications liaison with the public safety community in northeastern Ohio.

Meet Your AFC Advisors: Jesse Griggs (Tennessee)

Jesse Griggs received his formal electronics training in the U.S. Navy where he was an aviation electronic technician. After he left the Navy, he went back to work with the Tennessee Department of Correction. Jesse held the following positions: correctional officer, correctional corporal, correctional sergeant, training specialist, radio communications technician 2, radio communications 3 and correctional program support coordinator- coordinator of communications and utilities. He retired with 37 years of service

Meet Your AFC Advisors: Gene Thaxton (Oklahoma)

Gene Thaxton has been Oklahoma’s APCO frequency advisor since 1987. He is the Director of Oklahoma’s Law Enforcement Telecommunications System and is responsible for obtaining the first, forty 800 MHz channels to be issued by the Federal Communications System for Oklahoma’s 800 MHz Trunked System.

Meet Your AFC Advisors: Dave Saffel (West Virginia)

Dave Saffel began his public safety communications career joining the West Virginia State Police as a chief technician of 14 counties of the state in April of 1977. In 1992, he became the chief engineer of that agency and still serves in that capacity. In 2000, he also graduated from Fairmont State University with a Bachelor Degree in Business.

Noel Armstrong joined the Virginia State Police in November 2000 as a Communications Engineer and became an APCO local advisor about a year later. Noel’s electronics background started with the US Army where was trained on the Nike Hercules Missile Systems and then instructed the tracking radars and Ground Guidance computer system for three years in uniform and seven more as a civilian.
