Engulfed in an Instant

The calm afternoon and the lives of those living in the retirement community of Mayfair Mews in Virginia Beach were forever changed just after noon on April 6. It was at that moment when a U.S. Navy F/A-18 jet with a student pilot and trainer on board experienced serious engine failure from nearby Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana and plunged to the ground, crash landing into the buildings and courtyard of an apartment complex. Instantly, several buildings were engulfed in flames fed by jet fuel. The dark black plumes of thick smoke could be seen miles away.

New Voice Alert System Streamlining Call Response

Her words tumble from fire station loudspeakers in robotic blocks, ubiquitous enunciations that send fire crews and ambulances rolling down city streets, sirens blaring. Roanoke fire officials claim the voice – feminine, unwavering, precise – contributes to a decrease in response times. And it comes from a machine; a dispatch tool that draws from a trove of prerecorded street names and commands, bought and paid for with city capital improvement funds. The voice alert system was just one of several new technologies installed at the city fire department in recent months, a move aimed at streamlining call response and keeping radio airwaves clear.

OPINION: Arrest of Woman Seems Like a Bad Call to a Florida Reporter

The woman was worked up, and no doubt was a challenge for a Manatee County deputy to deal with. But I still don’t get how the heck Tamika S. Williams’ arrest last week can be lawfully justified. It looks like a classic case of the proverbial crime known as “irritating a cop.” The actual charge filed: Misusing 911. But the 911 call in question sounds like a perfectly reasonable one to me.
