Emergency Calls in Finland

As follow-up to discussing the complicated system of eight emergency numbers in Austria, as well as providing an overview of the 112 emergency number used in Europe, I will focus on another European Union (EU) country: Finland. Finland is famous for being home to a company that started by producing rubber boots and car tires and is today a leader in cell phone production, and for its use of the Finnish sauna. Almost every business building in the country has a wooden sauna cabin adjacent to a meeting room(s), allowing executives to continue a business meeting at a dry heat temperature of approximately 90° C (190° F).

FCC Wants Answers on 10,000 Dropped 9-1-1 Calls

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is asking Verizon for answers after receiving reports that approximately 10,000 9-1-1 calls were dropped during a Jan. 26 snowstorm. The outage affected trunks that handle wireless 9-1-1 calls in two Maryland counties, Montgomery and Prince George’s.

The Commission seeks comments on the development of a technical interoperability framework for the nationwide public safety broadband network. This document considers and proposes additional requirements to further promote and enable nationwide interoperability among public safety broadband networks operating in the 700 MHz band. This document addresses public safety broadband network interoperability from a technological perspective and considers interoperability at various communication layers.

DHS Launches Month-Long Multi-Band Radio Pilot During Nascar Events at Phoenix International Raceway

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate today announced the kick-off of a 30-day multi-band radio pilot for emergency responders, to begin Friday during opening day of NASCAR events at the Phoenix International Raceway. Fifteen participating law enforcement and emergency management partners across the state will incorporate technology into their daily operations and provide feedback on its utility.

West Virginia Developing Electronic Medical Registry

West Virginians will be able soon to convey their end-of-life choices electronically with paramedics, emergency room physicians and other health care providers. A project being coordinated by the West Virginia Center for End of Life Care and the West Virginia Health Information Network, or WVHIN, is now in the development stage with pilot programs scheduled to begin later this year.
