Power Outage in San Bernardino (Calif.) Temporarily Disables Emergency Communications

August 11, 2011

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A failed transformer knocked out power to 15,134 homes and businesses in and around the downtown area Wednesday, trapping people in elevators and temporarily shutting down emergency communication systems. People began calling 9-1-1 shortly before noon about the outage, but some of the calls didn’t come through right away, despite city departments having backup generators.

Phone Notification System Approved

June 1, 2011

Washington County, Minn. — Washington County authorities will soon be able to use telephone messages to alert the public to emergencies and relay important information. The Washington County Board approved spending $52,500 and signed a contract with Emergency Communication Network Inc. to provide the CodeRed service.

New York City Unveils New Public Safety System

“The Personal Localized Alerting Network, what we call PLAN,” said FCC Chair Julius Genachowski on May 10, “is a new technology and service that will turn your mobile device into an emergency alert device with potentially lifesaving messages when public safety is threatened.” The statement came during a press conference at the site of the World Trade Center to announce the launch of PLAN in New York City.

Beach’s Proposed Budget Updates 9-1-1 Alert System

Virginia Beach, Va. — When a gunman opened fire at an apartment building in Thalia in March 2008, killing or injuring five people, the city sent an automated message to neighborhood residents warning them to stay inside. The message, though, didn’t go out by cellphone or e-mail.

The West Linn (Ore.) Police Department’s late-night automated phone call last week warning the public of an armed robber drew criticism from some residents.The call came after one resident foiled a robbery at her home. The thief leapt from her deck and fled the scene as police arrived.
