4.9 GHz Band
August 2, 2012The purpose of these proposed rules is to invigorate and maximize use of the 4.9 GHz band and attract more users while improving spectrum efficiency. The Commission seeks comment on formal coordination requirements, expanded eligibility, how the band can complement the 700 MHz public safety broadband network, technical rule changes, aeronautical mobile operations, interoperability standards, and deployment reporting.

July 5, 2012Recent legislation reallocating the 700 MHz D Block for public safety broadband and setting aside substantial funding for a nationwide public safety broadband network was a huge win for APCO International and its partners in the public safety community. Of course, no legislation is perfect, and in this case the otherwise positive legislation contains a few provisions that create major challenges for a subset of public safety land mobile radio systems.
