Discussions on Next Generation 9-1-1 often include the topic of location. Many aspects must be considered to ensure we’re all on the same page with regard to what location truly means. The increase in multi-line phone system, mobile device and Voice over Internet Protocol usage has made 9-1-1 location acquisition much more complex. In this article, we’ll review the basics of Enhanced 9-1-1 location, and issues currently creating confusion, which may continue with NG9-1-1 if not addressed.

Florida Councilman Learns that a Call to 9-1-1 from Cell May Be Rerouted

March 22, 2011

Palm Beach, Fla. — Councilman Robert Wildrick learned through experience that a cell phone call placed in Palm Beach to 9-1-1 may get bounced around before ringing in at the town’s telecommunications center at the police station. Wildrick used his cell phone when he found himself face-to-face with an emergency situation last season at the docks of the North End’s Sailfish Club.

Spoofing Still Plagues PSAPs

Although it seems like just a harmless prank, spoofing can tie up emergency resources. The FCC is currently accepting comments on regulations to prohibit this misrepresentation.

Emergency Locator Bracelet Leads to Missing Long Beach Man

February 28, 2011

Long Beach, Calif. — An elderly man who wandered away from his downtown home earlier this week was found safe with the help of an emergency locator bracelet, police said Friday. Police dispatchers learned the man was given a free emergency locator bracelet as part of the police department’s Safe Reunion/Long Beach program. Once the bracelet was activated the man was quickly found.

CEA-Leti and Partners Develop System to Monitor Public-Safety Personnel in Dangerous Situations

January 28, 2011

Grenoble, France — CEA-Leti and its partners have developed a system combining motion-capture and precise indoor localization. The goal of this device is improving the safety of firefighters and other public-safety personnel in buildings and other confined areas such as underground parking lots. CASSIDIAN, 3D Plus, and SDIS, the emergency-response service for the Rhone region, are Leti’s partners in the Demoloc Project, which is funded by the French National Research Agency.

Dispatcher Did All She Could in Triple Killing

December 3, 2010

Even when following proper procedure, there is no guarantee that a cell phone caller can be found. Police officers can do only so much when an anonymous 9-1-1 call comes from a cell phone, as was the case with a woman who was found stabbed to death last week.
