On Wednesday, Jan. 26, 150 attendees filled an FCC Commission Meeting Room, and another 350 attendees joined remotely, to learn and discuss how the FCC’s VHF/UHF narrowbanding mandate affects their public safety agencies. Designed to assist licensees in completing the transition to narrowband radio communications, this FCC workshop was led by two panels of subject matter experts.

After years of delays by elected officials struggling with what they perceive as an “unfunded mandate” and a reluctance to spend money in this tough economy, you finally received approval to replace all your radios to comply with the FCC’s narrowbanding mandate. You purchase the new radios, program them with the new interoperability channels and modify your FCC license to reflect narrowband emissions. But when you complete the distribution and installation, you discover that you’re short 23 front-line radios. And you’re out of budget funds. All FCC Part 90 licensees oper­ating in VHF spectrum 150–174 MHz and UHF spectrum based on location 421–512 MHz must reduce their emission to 12.5 kHz or less or use technology that provides an equivalency to 12.5 kHz in a 25 kHz emission on or before Jan. 1, 2013. The FCC’s ultimate goal is for 6.25 kHz or equivalent emission in the future. As of today, the FCC has not set a date for when this must take place.

The Federal Communications Commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (Bureau) today released the agenda for a workshop on VHF/UHF narrowbanding to assist licensees in completing the transition to narrowband radio communications by January 1, 2013. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, January 26, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the Commission Meeting Room (TW-C305).

Communication Breakdown in Wisconsin: City & County Agencies at Odds over Emergency Radio System

August 12, 2010

In the basement of the Dane County (Wis.) Sheriff’s Office, four pallets loaded with radios, still in their boxes, are taking up floor space. At issue, the VHF radios don’t work on Madison’s 800 MHz system. The state is encouraging VHF. And narrowbanding means a decision has to be made soon.
