9-1-1 Center Training 8 New Workers

January 11, 2012

Eight new 911 Center employees began training Monday, another step toward easing the pressure that has beleaguered the center for months. The new employees will complete five weeks of training followed by several weeks of shadowing experienced dispatchers and call-takers, said Terry Baxter, interim director of the newly created 911 Public Safety Communication Department.

Mandated Telecommunicator Training Takes Effect in Florida

Here in Florida, one of the biggest changes that will be happening for the public safety telecommunicator is state-mandated standardized training (also known as the Denise Amber Lee Bill). Police Dispatching Tips & Tools

A 9-1-1 telecommunicator listens to the radio, calls for a wrecker, runs warrants and dispatches officers on calls for service, all while providing customer service to the multitude of everyday callers. Telecommunicators possess the innate ability to complete several tasks — such as hearing multiple conversations and obtaining additional information for officers — at the same time without missing a beat. But sometimes, callers are less than cooperative or unable to give the necessary information. For every call received, telecommunicators need to use various tools to obtain additional information for responding units.
